County Cavan cottages

Home of meandering rivers, streams and tree-lined lakes, County Cavan is perfect for those looking for looking to discover the true beauty of Ireland. County Cavan also boasts ‘a lake for every day’, with 365 bodies of water strewn across the region. So if you’re looking to be by the water, our County Cavan holiday cottages may just be perfect for you.

When you book a self-catering cottage in Cavan, you can look forward to an exciting break filled with nature, sightseeing and relaxing walks. One particular walking beauty spot in Cavan is the Shannon-Erne Waterway, connecting the two rivers which spring from the barren Cuilcagh Mountains in Cavan's north-west. It’s a great place for a riverside dog walk too, and if you do plan on bringing a canine companion along, be sure to check out our dog-friendly cottages. The mystical source of the Shannon, known as the 'Shannon Pot', is just a few miles north of Dowra, on the Cavan Way and is another great walking spot.

Like much of Ireland, Cavan has a deep-rooted mythological past connected to Gaelic folklore. It’s rich landscapes have inspired various literary works throughout the years, the most famous being Jonathon Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Gulliver himself was based on a local Cavan man, Big John Doughty, who was said to have been so strong he could carry a horse on his shoulders!

Cavan town is unique in that it is the only Irish town established by a native Irish family, the O’Reillys, rather than settlers. In the town you’ll find two very impressive buildings, Cavan town hall and the Cathedral of SS Patrick and Feidhlim, which has a very impressive 68-metre spire. There are also a number of pubs, shops and eateries across the town.

Northwestern Cavan comprises uplands, intersected by valleys, declining toward the main valley of the River Erne, where the main features are the drumlins (long oval mounds) that alternate with lakes, rivers, peat bogs, and pastures. East of the Erne valley is a line of slate and shale hills.

With a wealth of diverse landscapes to explore, a holiday cottage in County Cavan provides the perfect base to explore one of Ireland’s prettiest counties, so why not take a look?
